Aloha mai kakou,
On behalf of the Hawai’i Film Office, we are pleased to present the latest edition of the Hawai’i Production Index, your official guide to film, television and digital media production in Hawai’i.
2013 is an auspicious year. For starters it marks the 100th anniversary of film production in the Hawaiian Islands. And for the Hawai’i Film Office, we are celebrating 35 years serving as the central point of contact in support of all film production and administration of our successful tax credit program.
And speaking of our tax credit, our state Legislature passed a bill this year increasing by 5 percent across the board the production tax credit, known as Act 88. The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature. If signed into law, the expanded Act 88 would take effect July 1, 2013. Amendments include 20% for qualified expenditures incurred on the island of Oahu and 25% for those expenditures incurred on any of the Neighbor Islands of Maui, Molokai, Lana’i, Kaua’i and the Big Island of Hawai’i, an increase in the existing credit cap from $8 million to $15 million per production, includes internet distribution as a claimable activity and extension of the sunset date to January 1, 2019.
We are grateful to our Legislature and our Administration for seeing the tremendous value of a thriving film industry in our Islands … what it does for our economy, what it does to support our visitor industry, and of course, how such a clean industry creates good jobs and protects our natural and cultural environment.
100 years of filmmaking is quite an achievement. So many iconic film and television shows have been shot across the Hawaiian Islands over the years. When Universal Pictures first produced “Shark God” and “Hawaiian Love” in 1913, Hawai’i’s Queen Lili’uokalani was still alive. Today, the Hawai’i Film Office in partnership with the Island County Film Offices works hard to facilitate film permitting and make the process as seamless as possible for producers.
The Hawai’i Film Office already boasts the only consolidated film permitting system of its kind in the country. As part of a new age of film production in the islands, the state office will be launching the first in a series of new online services for film permitting, beginning with our Open and Accessible sites. You can access this new 24/7 e-permitting option, along with all the other film permitting and tax credit information you need, on our website, hawaiifilmoffice.com
As always we want to point you to our Guidelines to Filming in Sensitive Hawai’i Locations section to share expanded information about why Hawai’i is such a special place from a native Hawaiian and natural environment perspective. For more details, see pages 17-20 in the book.
All of this demonstrates to producers from around the world that we are serious about promoting Hawai’i as the world’s premiere filming destination.
With this guide as your comprehensive resource, you’ll see why we are so proud of our Islands, our talented production professionals and the growing industry they support. E komo mai, welcome.
