HFO manages the production tax credit (Act 88/89) which provides a 20-25% refundable tax credit to qualified productions. As the liaison between government and filmmakers, this office works closely with other state agencies, county film commissioners, and federal agencies in the state to assist filmmakers in obtaining the permits required for filming use of public areas. HFO also assists with questions concerning ownership and use of private facilities. Our goal is to encourage the development of the local film industry by promoting the islands as a filming location and by providing a supportive environment for your work. The state owns and operates the Hawaii Film Studio, a complex that includes a 16,500 sq. ft. sound stage, a 12,000 sq. ft. shooting stage, a 9,800 sq. ft. construction mill and technical building, a 9,100 sq. ft. production office building, set dressing and props. The studio is conveniently located on state property adjacent to Diamond Head, within minutes of the Honolulu International Airport, the downtown financial center, and Waikiki Beach. Hawaii as a filming location offers beautiful and varied sites, exceptional weather, a skilled and experienced cadre of production technicians, and the dedicated services of the county film commissioners and the Hawaii Film Office. Feel free to contact us. We will assist you in any way possible.
